Intermediate

Overview

The Intermediate Course focuses on helping students develop ear-training, melodic and harmonic applications, syncopation, improvisation, speed, rhythmic applications, and other keyboard techniques for performing in a band, playing a recital, or even composing melodies and songs. Students will listen, recognize, imitate and practice different song styles and rhythms.

Successful completion of the Beginner Course entitles students to enrol for our Intermediate classes. New students with keyboard basics are welcome to enrol upon passing an assessment. Intermediate students tend to enjoy our community at MKS. We use social media platforms to interact, share, and motivate each other.

Using contemporary songs and minus one tracks, students will improve and sharpen their keyboard skills by applying the techniques and adapting concepts from the Beginner Course syllabus. The primary focus of this course is to give the student confidence to perform and understand their way around the keyboard.

Intermediate Level 1 : IMITATION & IMPROVISATION

Listening. Learning lines by ear. Transcribing solos. Absorbing a player’s feel, articulation, and time. This is where it all begins. While you do need to have a solid understanding of music theory, the truth is that scales and chords, no matter how much you memorize them or run them up and down, aren’t going to magically turn into great stylistic improvisations full of long lines and interesting harmonies.

  • Ear Training & Imitation
  • Scales & Runs
  • Harmonic Ideas
  • Personal Sounds
  • Articulation and Swing
  • Sight Reading & Transcription
  • All 7 Keys
  • Melody Innovation
  • Shuffle, Waltz and Blues
  • Advanced Chord Progressions
  • Phrasing
  • MKS Level 3 Evaluation & Grading
